What are Dental Implants?
When an individual is missing a tooth, it can significantly affect self-confidence and health. A missing tooth can cause problems with chewing, which can disturb the digestive system, and it can make it embarrassing to smile or speak. Dental implants are the most effective treatment for replacing a missing tooth. Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that are a long-term solution for missing teeth. Here at Implant Dentistry of Virginia, we are proud to offer this option to our patients and encourage you to learn more about the dental implant process.
How Long Does the Dental Implant Process Take to Complete?
- Stage One: Evaluation and Preparation – During this phase, your dental professional will examine your gums and jawbone to see if bone grafting is necessary. If you don’t require bone grafting, you will proceed to the second stage in the process. However, if there is not enough jawbone to effectively support the implant, bone grafting will take about three to six months to complete. In most circumstances, bone grafting is necessary when you have a that is tooth missing for an extended amount of time. When bone grafting is needed, you will have a small piece of bone taken from another area of your body, which will be transplanted to your jawbone. In addition, artificial bone may also be used for bone grafting.
- Stage Two: Replacement of the Tooth Root – During this stage, an artificial tooth root will be placed into the jawbone. Once the artificial root has been placed, it will take a number of months to heal, but the actual placement of the root will only take a matter of hours to complete. During healing, the implant will fuse with the surrounding bone tissue.
- Stage Three: Placement of the Abutment – When the artificial tooth root has bonded to the bone, a small connector, which is known as an abutment, will be placed on the implant above the gums.
- Stage Four: Crown Placement – Once your gums have completely healed, you will be ready to have a crown placed on the abutment. Your dental professional will make an impression of your mouth to create a crown that is the proper size and matches the color of your surrounding teeth.
