In dentistry, a crown is a cap placed over a tooth. It can be used for restorative purposes to strengthen a tooth weakened by decay or injury, or it can be cosmetic. In the latter case, a crown can be used to make a tooth appear whiter, straighter or larger. Cosmetic crowns are usually made of porcelain, and they are designed to match the color of the patient’s teeth as closely as possible.
What Does the Process Involve?
Before installing cosmetic crowns, we will first need to take impressions of the patient’s teeth. We may take X-rays to determine the extent of any decay; in some cases, the patient will need to undergo a procedure like a root canal first.
During the procedure, our dentist will fit the tooth to accommodate the crown. Depending on the situation, he will either build the tooth up with filling material or he will file the tooth down so the crown can fit over it. Our dentist will then need to make impressions of the tooth getting the crown. The dentist will also take impressions of the neighboring teeth to ensure the new crown doesn’t interfere with the bite. The dentist will then install a temporary crown.
When the custom-made crown is ready, our dentist will remove the temporary crown and make sure the permanent crown fits properly. Assuming it does fit, our dentist will use a special cement to permanently bond the crown to the patient’s tooth.
Ideal Candidates for Cosmetic Crowns
The ideal candidate will be a patient in good overall health with realistic expectations. They should understand that some aspects of the procedure, like filing down the tooth to fit the crown, are not reversible. However, they are for the benefit of the overall result. Similarly, they should understand and accept that they may need to undergo other procedures to improve their oral health and/or strengthen the treatment before getting the crown.
