When extensive dental work is required in order to restore and beautify your smile, it can be intimidating to think about the cost. At Implant Dentistry of Virginia, Dr. Adam Hogan encourages patients to consider their dental treatment from a cost vs. value perspective. The Cost vs. Value of Having Dental Treatment
In advanced cases of dental correction when cosmetic dentistry, dentures, and implants become necessary, many patients hesitate to move forward with their treatments due to the potential cost. While these treatment options may require some financial planning, the value of having them performed far outweighs the money spent. When considering having dental work done, it is important to remember the definitions of these two words:
- Cost: An amount paid or required in payment for a purchase; a price
- Value: Worth in usefulness or importance to the possessor; utility or merit
Is the Value Greater than the Cost? If “Yes,” it’s Worth it!
In terms of the value of having cosmetic dentistry, dentures, or implants, these treatments have tremendous short-term and long-term benefits such as:
- A confident, radiant smile that you are proud to show off
- Strong, natural teeth
- Maintaining healthy teeth
- Long-term management of the health and beauty of your smile
Rather than thinking about dental work from a cost perspective, remember that this is the smile that is with you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week while you eat, chew, talk, smile, laugh, and perform your daily functions. Not replacing your missing teeth can not only lead to embarrassment and self-consciousness, but it can also be detrimental to the strength and functionality of your bite.
While many of our patients pay with credit cards, cash or checks, we understand that sometimes you must finance extensive dental work. Therefore, our office is proud to participate with CareCredit, a healthcare credit agency. First, let’s meet you and find out what you need and want. Then if you need financing we’ll help you apply on CareCredit’s website, www.carecredit.com.

Dental Insurance FAQ
Have you heard about OUR in-office dental insurance plan?
We understand that many patients do not have dental insurance OR that their existing dental policy doesn’t provide adequate benefits. Therefore, we now offer benefits within our practice. If you don’t have insurance or you have an out-of-network policy, then you are eligible for these benefits. Please call our office for details.
What dental insurance companies does Dr. Hogan participate?
Our office works with almost all dental insurance companies to help you get the most from your dental benefits. Currently we are in-network for Delta Dental, MetLife and Cigna Insurances. In addition, we help you collect benefits if you have an out-of-network policy as well. *
*We reserve the right to add or delete insurances at any time.
What does “in-network” insurance mean?
In-network insurance means that we are contracted to regularly participate with your insurance company. Our office feels that your insurance company is, at least at a minimum, somewhat dedicated to your long-term dental health.
What does “out-of-network” Insurance mean?
Out-of-network means that we are not registered with your insurance company as a participating provider. There are many reasons for not participating with your insurance provider. But the primary reason is likely that we feel your company does NOT provide good benefits or long-term, dental care to you, our patient. If your company is one that routinely denies your necessary care or one that does not provide adequate reimbursement for our high-quality dentistry, then we would have elected to not participate with that insurance company. **
**We maintain a very high standard of care for our patients. We use the best and usually more expensive materials as well as American laboratories and labor. We invest and utilize modern dental technology when it produces better outcomes for the patient.
Do other patients see Dr. Hogan as out-of-network patients?
Overwhelmingly the answer is “yes.” It is a fact that almost 50% of our patients are actually out-of-network! This is much higher percentage than average in a dental practice. The reason for this is simple. These patients appreciate our compassionate, friendly atmosphere with quality, concierge dentistry. We are not a “big production dental factory” intent on seeing hundreds of patients each day. We don’t hustle you in and push you out.
We pride ourselves in excellent service, personalized attention and quality dentistry. We would be proud to call our patients “friends.” And in almost all patients, we get to know them personally. This is the reason that so many out-of-network patients step outside their insurance provider list to see Dr. Hogan. We invite you to come join our family.
How should I choose a dentist?
When you choose a provider, it is important that you do NOT pick a dentist simply based upon your insurance company’s list of “participating providers.” This would be absurd. First of all, you would know nothing about their dentistry or the character of person you are going to see.
Second, dental insurance doesn’t save you as much as you think. In most cases, the maximum allowable benefit to any single person in one year is only $1,000 or $1,500. Whether you are seeing a “participating” provider or a “non-participating” provider, it is likely that you will maximize your annual benefits. The “savings” just aren’t great enough for you to compromise your dental health care.
Instead, you should choose a dentist who will take his time with you and treat you with excellent dentistry. Come meet us to discover the difference.
I understand Dr. Hogan is a veteran of both the Navy and Marine Corps, so why doesn’t he take the military dental insurance?
In May 2017, the military changed insurance from MetLife to United Concordia. Previously, even though it was not an excellent policy we had accepted that insurance solely because it supported our military. But the switch to this particular United Concordia policy would not reimburse us enough to even pay our fixed expenses such as staff and rent. Unfortunately, like most of the office in Hampton Roads we were stuck in the position of having to elect not to participate.
When the government will properly support our military members and their families, then we will eagerly accept the military policy again. Until then as a veteran, Dr. Hogan would like to extend a 20% discount (up to the first $3,000 annually) of treatment to all active duty military members and their immediate families including spouses and minor children. In addition, we recommend that you consider taking out a second insurance policy or joining our in-office program. Please call our office for more information or to gain advice on second insurance policies. We would be happy to help.
Financial Options and Care Credit

Then if you need financing to afford that necessary care, we will help you apply on Care Credit’s website, www.carecredit.com .
